Trans Studies

Saturdays 4:00-6:00 at Boneshaker Books 2002 23rd Ave S, Minneapolis.

This course introduces students to a wide range of theories, social movements, and political issues that impact trans, intersex, and gender non-conforming (GNC) communities and explores the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and nation/nationality. We will discuss topics such as trans identities and LGBTQ politics, decolonizing “transgender,” trans activist strategies, media representation, recent legal and legislative efforts and their impact on trans and GNC people to name a few. This course operates on the basic premise that systems of power exist and that challenging hierarchical systems is integral to liberation. Ideally, students interested in joining the course should have some basic knowledge about systems of power and the dynamics of oppression/privilege; however, students who are willing to explore their own thinking and learn more about issues that affect trans, intersex, and GNC communities are absolutely welcome.
